 ゲントの「市庁舎」
現在の建物は後期ゴシック様式で1518年から1535年に建てられました。1540年にはゲント市民が皇帝への増税を拒絶したことに対する皇帝カール5世の報復で街は傷つきました。その時までに計画の1/3しかできていませんでしたが、市が建設を再開できたのは1572年からでした。しかし建築様式が変わり、18世紀初めまでにいくつかのルネッサンス様式の部分が付け加えられました。19世紀初めにはナポレオンの訪問のためにホール前の階段が改築されました。
"The town hall" of Ghent
The present building was built in late-gothic style between 1518 and 1535. In 1540 Ghent suffered reprisals from emperor Charles V because the citizens had dared to refuse to pay more taxes to the emperor. By then, only one third of the planned town hall had been constructed. It was only as from 1572 that Ghent could continue to build its town hall. However, the architectural style had changed and several renaissance-style parts were added to the building until the beginning of the 18th century. In the beginning of the 19th century the staircases in front of the hall were changed for a visit of Napoleon. |

像は賢人、ヘント（ガン）の醸造者などと呼ばれたフランドルの政治指導者のヤコブ・ファン・アルテフェルデです。百年戦争初期に名声を確立しました。
"Vrijdagsmarkt(Friday Market)"
The statue is Jacob van Artevelde who, also known as The Wise Man and the Brewer of Ghent, was a Flemish statesman and political leader in the early of 14th century. He rose to prominence during the early stages of the Hundred Years' War. |

 ブルージュ同様、こちらも運河が有名です。
Ghent is famous for canals same as Bruge. |

 ベルギーの七大秘宝のひとつ「ヘントの祭壇画」または「神秘の子羊」「神秘の子羊の礼拝」は、複雑な構成で描かれた非常に大規模な15世紀初期のフラマン地方の多翼祭壇画。展示されている「聖バーフ教会」はただ今修復中で一部のみ公開。「神秘の仔羊」も修復作業のため見られません。今は修復作業の様子や絵のＸ線画像など、修復に関わる特別展が開催されています。下絵とは全然違った仕上がりにびっくり。興味深い展示でした。
The Ghent Altarpiece (also called the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb or The Lamb of God) is a very large and complex early 15th century Early Flemish polyptych panel painting. St Bavo's Cathedral where it is displayed is under restoration now and only the part of the church is opened. We can't see this painting because it is also under restoration. Currently the special exhibition regarding the restoration, such as the situation of it and X-ray images of the painting, is held. I was very suprised at the difference between a rough sketch and the completion. It was a very interesting exhibition. |

 「フランドル伯爵居城」
城は14世紀に廃棄されるまでフランドル伯の居城でした。城はそれから裁判所、牢獄として使われ、最後には衰退しました。19世紀終わりには城は取り壊される予定でした。1885年にゲント市が城を購入し修復計画が始まりました。新しく建てられた家は取り壊され、壁と地下牢はオリジナルの形に修復されました。
"Gravensteen"
The castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders until they abandoned it in the 14th century. The castle was then used as a courthouse, a prison and eventually decayed. At the end of the 19th century, the castle was scheduled to be demolished. In 1885 the city of Ghent bought the castle and started a renovation project. The newly built houses were removed and the walls and dungeon were restored to their original condition. |

 「聖ミカエル橋」から旧市街に戻ります。この橋は1913年のゲント万国博覧会のために作られました。
I went back to the old town through "St. Michael's Bridge". This bridge was made for The Exposition universelle et internationale of 1913. |
