 ブリュッセルとアントワープの中間にある町。かつてはネーデルランドの首都として栄えていただけあって落ち着きのある美しい町です。お昼前にブリュッセルを出て半日観光に出かけました。
It's the town in the middle of Brussels and Antwerp. Formerly it was flourished as the capitol of the Netherland. For that reason, it's a calm and beautiful town. I left Brussels before noon and started a half day tourism. |

 今日の目的は「ヘット・アンケル」というベルギービール醸造所。ベルギーの中では最古の醸造所です。ここのテラスでランチします。元々は1471年にベギン会によって創立しました。1872年に蒸留所は後の1904年にHet Anker ("The Anchor")と改名するLouis Van Breedamの所有となりました。彼らはその後、ブラッセリーとホテルを開き2010年にはGouden Carolus Tripelビールを蒸溜したシングルモルトウイスキーを作り始めました。
Today's purpose is Belgian beer brewry named Het Ankel. It's the oldest brewry in Belgium. I will have a lunch on the terrace here. It was originally founded in 1471 by a community of Beguines. In 1872, the brewery was acquired by Louis Van Breedam, who renamed it Het Anker ("The Anchor") in 1904. They opened a brasserie and a hotel, and in 2010 began producing a single malt whisky, distilled from the Gouden Carolus Tripel. |

Everybody enjoyed a lunch with comparison of fresh beer. I had just a lunch because I can't drink alcohol. Great volume daily lunch. |

 「ベギン会教会」へ向かう小道。雰囲気あるよね。1560年頃、街の壁の外の教会は取り壊され、壁の内側の現在の教会のある場所に彼ら自身で建て直されました。彼らは元々あった建物を運び込み新しい居住区を建てました。そのため他の街の教会とは違って見えます。その典型的なフラマン様式と独特の建築のため教会は世界遺産となっています。
A lane to "Church of Beguinage". I think there is a religious atmosphere. Around 1560 the beguinage outside the city walls was destroyed. The beguines re-established themselves inside the city walls, where the Large Beguinage grew up. They bought up existing buildings and built new dwellings, which explains why the Large Beguinage is rather different in character from beguinages in other cities. Because of its typical Flemish character and unique architecture, the Large Beguinage was declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

 「聖カタリナ教会」
翌日この教会で結婚式をする二人が花とリボンで飾り付けしていました。このゴシック教会は14世紀に建てられました。この教会はローマ時代のカタリナの神話の言及に満ち溢れています。伝説では彼女はキリスト教信仰の棄教を拒み、皇帝は彼女に車裂きの刑を言い渡しました。彼女は高速で回り、それによって死に至る車輪の間のスポークに縛り付けられました。伝説によれば死に至ったのは彼女ではなく車輪でした。結局彼らは彼女は斬首されるべきだと決定しましたが、その際また奇跡が起こりました。彼女の首の傷からミルクが流れだし街の疫病を追い払ったとのことです。
"Church of Saint Katarina"
Two people who would get married next day decorated the church with flowers and ribbons. The Gothic Church of St Catherine was built in the fourteenth century. The church is full of references to Catherine, a mythical figure from the Roman period. Legend has it that she refused to renounce her Christian faith and the Roman emperor sentenced her to death on the wheel. She was tied between the spokes of the wheel which was then turned so fast that normally death resulted. Legend has it that it was not Catherine who broke but the wheel. Eventually they decided that Catherine should be beheaded but again something extraordinary happened: milk flowed from the wound in her neck, dispelling the plague in the city. |

 世界遺産「聖ロンバウツ大聖堂」の鐘楼とマルガレーテ妃（1480〜1530年）の銅像が立っています。マルガレーテ妃はハプスブルク家のマクシミリアン1世とブルゴーニュ公国のマリー公女の娘で、ベルギー・オランダを含めた「ネーデルランド」の国を治めていました。教会の建設は1200年が過ぎたすぐあたりに始められ、一部が使用可能となった1312年に聖別されました。1342年の市の大火の後、石工組合トップのJean d'Oisyによって修理され、第2段階の建設も始まりました。彼の後任によって教会中央は1437年に聖歌隊席は1451年に完成しました。
The belfry of St. Rumbold's Cathedral of the world heritage and a statue of Margareta of York (1480-1530). Margareta was a daughter between Maximilien I of The house of Hapsburg and princess Mary of the dukedom of Burgundy. She ruled the Netherland including the current Netherland and Belgium. Construction of the church itself started shortly after 1200, and it was consecrated in 1312, when part had become usable. After the city fire of 1342, the Master Mason Jean d'Oisy managed repairs and continued this second phase. His successors finished the vaults of the nave by 1437, and those of the choir by 1451. |

 ５００段以上のらせん階段を上がってメッヘレンの町を見渡しました。
他の鐘楼とは違い、スカイウォークという本当に頂上の部分まで行けるので３６０度見渡せて気持ちいいです。
I went up spiral staircases more than 500 steps and looked around the town of Mechelen. It is different from other belfries and we can go the skywalk which is the part of the true summit. I felt good to see a panoramic view of the town. |

 鐘楼を降りて「マルクト広場」へ。
これは市庁舎で２つの部分から成っています。未完成の鐘楼のある織物会館と議会宮殿です。なぜ鐘楼は未完成なのか。織物取引は14世紀に衰退し完成させる資金が不足しました。16世紀に仮の屋根が付けられるまで200年間、鐘楼は骨組みだけでした。しかしその屋根は今も残っています。鐘楼はユネスコ世界遺産です。鐘楼の右側は市庁舎の最も古い部分で以前の市庁舎の残りです。左側は議会宮殿ですが、この一角は16世紀の計画に基づいて20世紀に完成されたため、議会が行われたことはありません。
We went downstairs and to "Market Place".
It's a town hall and consists of two parts:the cloth hall with unfinished belfry and the Palace of the Great Council. Why wasn't the belfry ever finished? The cloth trade went into decline in the fourteenth century and there wasn't the money to complete the building. For two hundred years the belfry was no more than a shell, until it was eventually provided with a temporary roof in the sixteenth century. However that roof is still there. The belfry is now a UNESCO world heritage site. On the right of the belfry you can see the oldest part of the town hall, the remains of the earlier cloth hall. On the left is the Palace of the Great Council. However it never actually met here, because this wing was only completed in the twentieth century in accordance with the original sixteenth-century plans. |

1452年から1520年の建設の最終段階で鐘楼が建てられました。16世紀の初めに技術的理由ではなく財政的理由から鐘楼の上部は撤去されました。

16世紀初めの建物で今は裁判所として使われています。1561年に市の所有となりましたがその後一旦、フィリップ2世の右腕でメッヘレン初の大司教グランヴィルの住居となりました。1609年には再び市の所有となり1619年から1795年までオランダ議会の本部として提供されました。
"Palace of Margareta of York"
It is an early 16th-century building and used for a lower Court of Justice now. It was owned by the city until 1561. After that it became the residence of Granvelle, the first Archbishop of Mechelen, and right hand man of Philip II once. In 1609 the building was bought back by the city and served as the headquarters of the Great Council of the Netherlands from 1616 until 1795. |

 「マルガレータの宮殿」の庭。ここでメッヘレン観光は終了です。半日楽しみました。
「地球の歩き方」にはベルギー国鉄の「メッヘレン」駅から徒歩２０分となっていますが、もう一つ先の駅（アントワープより）からだと徒歩３分でこの宮殿です。
The garden of "Palace of Margareta of York". The tourism of Mechelen ends here. I enjoyed half day trip. Though Japanese guidebook mentions it takes 20 minutes from the Mechelen station of the national railway, it takes 3 minutes from one more former station (Antwerp side). |
