 ちょっと古い話ですが、5月にあった4連休で北フランスのノルマンディー地方を旅しました。本格的な初めての自動車旅行でちょっとびびりながら国境を車で通過。
Though it's a slightly old story, we traveled Normandy region in Northern France on four holidays of May. We crossed the border by car with the beating hearts because it was the first genuine driving trip for us. |

 今回のメインはモン・サン・ミッシェル修道院なのですがその道中にある第２次大戦の激戦地も見て回ろうと思いました。ノルマンディー上陸作戦70周年ですし。まずはサン・ロー。その大聖堂。ここは米英軍の爆撃と陸上の激戦で街が廃墟となりました。1944年の爆撃の後、建っていた建物は13世紀から15世紀にかけて城の教会を置き換えたフランボワイアン・ゴシック様式のこの大聖堂だけでした。ファサードと天井は破壊され、２つの塔も一つは破壊されもうひとつは頂上部分が破壊されました。ヨーロッパの街はその後、ワルシャワのように意地になって修復した街とこのサン・ローのように戦争の記念としてそのまま残そうという街に分かれます。ちなみにサン・ローは米軍の護衛空母の名前となり、その空母は第一回神風特攻隊の敷島隊によって撃沈されています。
Though the main destination of this trip was "Mont Saint-Michela" , we thought we went to see also the scene of a hard‐fought battle of World War II on the way. It's the 70th anniversary of the Normady landing oeration. Firstly it's Saint-Lo. It's the cathedral. This town became the ruin because of the bombing of The US and The British air force and the fierce battle on the ground. Among the only standing buildings after the 1944 bombings was the Notre-Dame church, built in Flamboyant Gothic style from the 13th to the 15th centuries to replace the former castle's chapel; its roof and façade were destroyed, as well as one of its two towers and the top of the other one. Later European town devided into two types. One is the town restored obstinately like Walsaw and another is the town remained as it was for the war heritage like Saint-Lo. By the way Saint-Lo became the name of the escort carrier of US and that was sunk by the body of "Shikishima" which was the first Kamikaze corps. |

 サン・ローには中世の城壁も残っています。周りになにも説明がないので、よく由来がわかりません。まあ書いてあってもフランス語読めないからわからないんですけど。
Saint-Lô also has remains of its medieval line of walls. There is no explanation around it, so we don't know the history. Even if there is a explanation, the situation is same because we can't read French. |

 島内ホテル予約者は駐車場が準備されています。そうは言っても、島内に駐車できるわけではなく対岸に車を停めてバスで島まで向かいます。バスもそんなに近くまで行ってくれるわけではなく、停留所から結構歩かなくてはいけません。
A car park is prepared for people who book the hotel in the island. Even so, they can't park the car in the island. They park their car on the opposite bank and go there by bus. However the bus doesn't go so much to the neighborhood and we must walk a lot from the bus stop. |

 モン・サン・ミッシェル名物のオムレツ。おいしくないとみんなが言うけど名物はとりあえず食べておかなきゃ。聞かれたら…おすすめはしないよ。もっとおいしいものはたくさんあります。
An omelet is special product of Mont Saint-Michel. Though a lot of people says it's not nice, I think I should eat the special product firstly. If I asked about taste, I won't recommend it. There are a lot of more delicious foods. |

 部屋の窓から「モン・サン・ミッシェル」が見えます。実は窓の外には観光客が歩いています。8世紀に最初の修道院が造られる前、この島はモン・トンと呼ばれていました。伝説によれば708年に大天使ミカエルがアヴァンシェ司教の聖オーバートの前に現れ、岩だらけの小島に教会を建てるよう導きました。聖オーバートはミカエルが指で彼の頭蓋骨に穴を焼いて開けるまで繰り返し天使の導きを無視しました。
We could see the "Mont Saint-Michel" from the window of the room. To tell the truth, tourists walked the striking distance of the window. Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called Mont Tombe. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared in 708 to St. Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel's instruction until Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger. |

 夜景の「モン・サン・ミッシェル」。きれいだね。1067年、修道院はノルマンディー公ウィリアムがイングランド王位につくサポートをしました。百年戦争の間、イングランドは島に繰り返し侵略をしましたが、修道院の改良された防御のため攻略はできませんでした。最初は1423年から24年、その後の1433年から44年においてトーマス・スケールズ指揮下のイギリス軍が包囲を行いました。スケールズが攻略をあきらめた際に捨てた鉄製の射石砲が今でも残されています。モン・サン。ミッシェルの毅然とした抵抗はフランス、特にジャンヌ・ダルクを覚醒させました。
"Mont Saint-Michel" of a night view. It was very beautiful. In 1067, the monastery of Mont Saint-Michel gave its support to Duke William of Normandy in his claim to the throne of England. During the Hundred Years' War, the English made repeated assaults on the island, but were unable to seize it due to the abbey's improved fortifications. The English initially besieged the Mont in 1423-24, and then again in 1433-34 with English forces under the command of Thomas Scales. Two wrought-iron bombards that Scales abandoned when he gave up his siege are still on site. Mont Saint-Michel's resolute resistance inspired the French, especially Joan of Arc. |

 部屋からの修道院。宗教改革と共に修道院の巡礼地としての人気や地位は衰えていき、フランス革命のころにはほとんど修道僧は住んでいない状況となりました。修道院は閉鎖され主に共和国政権に反対する聖職者を収容する刑務所に変更されました。

 ５月１日メーデー、修道院はお休みでした。翌日、９時半のオープンに合わせて修道院に向かいます。
1863年に刑務所は閉鎖され、1874年には修道院は歴史的遺跡と宣言されます。モン・サン・ミッシェルとその入江は1979年にユネスコ世界遺産に登録されました。
The abbey was closed on 1st of May of May Day. The next day we went to the abby to opening of half past 9.
The prison was closed in 1863, and the mount was declared an historic monument in 1874. Mont Saint-Michel and its bay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 |

 GW中ということもあって日本人団体客もいっぱい。みなさん開くのを待っていました。ところが…２日はストで一日開くことはなく、聞くところによると３日もストは続いていたそうです。
There were a lot of Japanese party travelers because it was in "Golden Week" of Japan. All of them waited for open. However the abbey didn't open all day on 2nd because of the strike and I've heard the strike continued also on 3rd. |

 島から続く橋を渡ったところに写真スポットがあります。ここにいたらこれから渡ろうという人にたくさん写真を撮ってと頼まれました。「今日は修道院、閉まってるよー」と最新情報を教えてあげましたー。みんなショック受けてたよ。
There is a nice point to take a picture in the place across the bridge spreading out from the island. While I was here, I was asked by many people to take a picture. I told them the latest information that the abbey was closed today. Everyone was shocked. |

 ここからはカーンの街です。カーン城から見たサン・ピエール教会。現在の建物の建設は13世紀初めと16世紀に始まりました。主要部分は1944年に破壊され、その後修復されました。前のサン・ローは米軍と独軍装甲教導師団、第2SS装甲師団「ダス・ライヒ」の激戦で廃墟になりましたが、ここは英軍と第12SS装甲師団「ヒトラー・ユーゲント」の激戦で廃墟となりました。
It's a town of Caen from here. Saint-Pierre Church from the fortress of Caen. The construction of the present building took place between the early 13th and the 16th centuries. The spire was destroyed in 1944, and has since been rebuilt. Saint-Lo which I mentioned before became the ruins in a fierce battle between US army and Panzer Lehr Division, 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" of the Germany. Caen also became the ruin in a fierce battle between the British army and 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitler Youth" of the Germany. |

 カーン城の城壁。
有名なイギリスを征服したノルマンディー公ウィリアムが1060年に築いたお城で、城壁しか残っていません。敷地内には美術館とか博物館とかありますが、入場していません。

 街の中を歩いているとこういう教会の残骸がポツンとあったりします。ナチス時代、ドイツの子どもたちはヒトラーユーゲントという青少年団に入り、ヒトラーに忠誠を誓いました。第12SS装甲師団はそのヒトラーユーゲントから隊員を選抜して設立されました。だから下級兵士はほとんど16才以下でした。
When we walked the town, we could find the wreck of church alone. For Nazis Era, children of Germany took part in the young men's association called "Hitler Youth" and pledged their loyalty to Hitler. 12th SS Panzer Division was established by chosen members of "Hitler Youth". Therefore most of the lower soldiers were under 16 years old. |

 女子修道院。
ウィリアム征服王の奥方マチルダによって1062年に建設が開始され、1130年に完成しました。フランス革命の際、修道女のコミュニティーは弾圧され解散させられました。天井は1865年に取り壊され再建されています。現在は地方会議場で見学ツアーがあります。最初はそのツアーについていったのですが、フランス語のみなので、断念。
Women's Abbey
The construction of the abbey started by Matilda who was a wife of William the Conqueror in 1062 and completed in 1130. The community of nuns were dispersed and suppressed by the French Revolution. The vault was demolished and rebuilt in 1865. It is a local conference room now and organizes guided tours. At first we followed the tour, but we gave up because explanation was only French. |

 女子修道院の隣にあるトリニテ教会。
ノルマンディーの教会には正面の彫刻はありません。祭壇正面にマチルダの墓があります。オリジナルの塔は百年戦争の際、破壊され18世紀に打たれ強い手すり状のものに置き換えられました。教会は1990年から93年にかけて最新の修理がなされています。

 「男子修道院」
ウィリアム征服王は遠縁のマチルダと結婚しましたが、これが当時、親族結婚にうるさかった法王レオ９世の怒りにふれ彼は破門されました。その怒りをとくために1063年に作られた修道院です。宗教戦争の際、教会真ん中の高い頂塔は崩壊し、以後再建されていません。1804年から1961年まで修道院の建物は名門高校として使われていました。

William the Conqueror got married with Matilda who was distantly related to him. This incurred the wrath of the Pope Leo ninth who was very particular about the marriage between relatives at the time and William was excommunicated by him. It's The abbey which was made to remove the anger in 1063. As a consequence of the Wars of Religion, the high lantern tower in the middle of the church collapsed and was never rebuilt. From 1804 to 1961, the abbey buildings accommodated a prestigious high school. |

 Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux教会。教会はおそらく10世紀に設立されました。教会は100年戦争で大きく傷つき、英国の占領の最中およびその後に再建されました。教会は1844年に状態の悪さから閉鎖されました。1944年、近くに停車していたドイツ軍戦車の集団を狙った砲弾によってナーヴが激しく破壊されました。その時以来、修復作業の対象から外されました。カーンはサン・ローよりは修復されていますが、全部ではありません。「ヒトラー・ユーゲント」は約2ヶ月にわたり圧倒的な英軍からカーンを守りぬき、ノルマンディー上陸作戦のスケジュールに大きな遅れを生じさせました。その代わり、この師団は定員2万名のうち6割以上の人員を失い一旦壊滅しました。この師団所属ではありませんが、ドイツ武装親衛隊の戦車戦のエース、ミハエル・ヴィットマンもこの戦いで27両の戦闘車両を撃破しています。（彼はロシア戦線で100両以上の戦車を撃破して有名）
It's Church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux. The church was probably founded during the 10th century. The church was badly damaged during the Hundred Years' War and reconstructed during and after the English occupation. The chrch was closed to the public in 1844 because of its state of decay. In 1944, it was hit by a shell aimed at a column of German tanks which was parked in the vicinity. The nave was largely destroyed. Since that time the church has not been the object of restoration work. Though Caen is restored more than Saint-Lo, it's not all. "Hitler Youth" kept on protecting Caen from the overwhelming British military for approximately two months and caused a big delay in a schedule of the Normandy landing operation. On the other hand this division lost the staff more than 60% in 20,000 capacity and was destroyed once. Though Michael Wittmann who was the ace of tank warfare of the German Waffen-SS didn't belong to this division, he also defeated 27 combat vehicles in this battle. (He is famous by having defeaten tanks more than 100 at a Russian front.) |

 街でお夕飯。レ・ガレオンという小さなお店に決めました。
予約でいっぱいになっていたようだけど、ラッキーなことにひとつ空いていて入れてもらえました。後から後からお客さんがきて断られてた。よかったー。
We had a dinner in the town. We decided the small restaurant called "Le Galion". Though I thought most tables were already booked, fortunately we could enter because one table was available. Customers came and were refused one after another. We were very lucky. |

 「エトルタ」を出て 街そのものが美術館と言われる古都、「ルーアン」に到着。ノルマンディー独特の木骨組の建物が印象的。ここは上部ノルマンディー地方の首都でありノルマンディーの歴史的首都です。中世ヨーロッパにおける最大で最も繁栄した都市のひとつであり、中世ノルマンディーの財務省でもありました。11世紀から15世紀にかけてイングランドと近代フランスの大部分を統治したアングロ-ノルマン王朝の首都の一つでもありました。ジャンヌ・ダルクが1431年に処刑された場所もここです。
We left "Etretat" and arrived at "Rouen". It's the ancient city where town itself is said to be an art museum. A building of the Normandy unique wooden frame is impressive. It is the capital of the region of Upper Normandy and the historic capital city of Normandy. One of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, it was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy in the Middle Ages. It was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France from the 11th to the 15th centuries. It was here that Joan of Arc was executed in 1431. |

 木骨組の建物と大時計はルーアンのシンボル。Gros Horlogeは16世紀に遡る天文時計ですが、ムーブメントは更に古いです。（1389年）

 正面の建物、左に倒れてない？奥に見える尖塔は「サン・マクルー教会」。後期ゴシック期（15-16世紀）から16世紀のルネッサンス期への変化の間に建設されました。
I wonder the building of the front leans to the left. A spire in the depth is "Eglise Saint Maclou". It was built during the transition from the late Gothic period (15th - 16th century) to the Renaissance in the 16th century. |

 「ノートルダム大聖堂」
モネの有名な連作のモデルになったヨーロッパ有数の大聖堂。建設は12世紀に始まり、1880年に完成しました。20世紀に入り第2次大戦では1944年4月に英国空軍によって爆撃されました。

It is said that it is the European eminent cathedral which became the model of famous series of paintings of Monet. Construction on the current building began in the 12th century and was completed in 1880.  「サン・マクルー中庭」
１４世紀ルーアンをペストが襲った際、周辺の４分の３の住民が亡くなり、その遺骨を収容されるために作られた建物。木の柱に骸骨や墓を表す彫刻が残り、なんとなーく不気味な感じ。現在は美術学校として利用されています。

When the plague attacked Rouen in the 14th century, three-fourth local residents died. This building was made for taking in their remains. The sculptures which means graves and skeletons remain and make me take a somehow weird feeling. It is used for the art school. |

We left Rouen and went to Calais. It's a quiet county town which shows rabbits in many places. |

ここはドーバー海峡挟んでイギリスに最も近い街です。この辺は街ではなく郊外なので、本当になにもありません。近くにはイギリスに渡るフェリー乗り場があります。

This is the town which is the nearest to the U.K. across Strait of Dover. Because this neighborhood is the suburbs not a town, there is really nothing. There is a ferry landing place over the U.K. near here. |

これは市庁舎。フレミッシュ・ルネッサンス様式で1911年から1925年にかけて1885年のカレーとサン・ピエールの統合を記念して建てられました。以前の市庁舎は1818年に建てられました。この街も第1次、第2次世界大戦で破壊され廃墟となりました。ここの鐘楼は世界遺産のひとつに登録されています。

This is the town hall. It was built in the Flemish Renaissance style between 1911 and 1925 to commemorate the unification of the cities of Calais and Saint Pierre in 1885. A previous town hall had been erected in 1818. This town was also destroyed and became the ruin in the case of World War I and II. The belfry of this town is registered as the part of the world heritage site "Belfries of Belgium and France". |

この彫刻はロダン作「五人の市民」で1889年に完成しました。百年戦争の際、カレーは長期の包囲の末イギリス軍に占領されますが、1347年、サン・ピエールと五人の市民がイギリス王エドワード3世の前に出頭し、他の市民を救ったという話がモチーフになっています。

The story that Saint Pierre and five other burghers arreared in fron of Edward III, the king of England and saved other citizens in 1347 is a motif. |

 カレーをすぎてダンケルクへ。ここは第2次大戦のフランス降伏前、34万人の英仏軍がドイツ軍の爆撃の中イギリスまで撤退したことで有名な場所。そんなことがわかるものは今なにも残ってませんけど。写真は市庁舎。
From Calais to Dunkirk. This is a famous place from which the British and the French of 340,000 people withdrew to the U.k. in the bombing of the German before the surrender of the World War II in France . There is nothing to remind such a history. It's the town hall. |

 こちらは鐘楼。18世紀後半フランス科学アカデミーのジャン＝バティスト・ジョゼフ・ドランブルが行った子午線弧長測量の北限。この結果を基にメートルが定義されました。ここも世界遺産ベルギー・フランスの鐘楼群のひとつ。
It's a belfry. It's the northernmost point of Meridian arc length surveying which Jean-Baptiste Joseph Delambre of French Academy of Sciences conducted in late of the 18th century. A metre was defined based on the result of the survey. This is also the part of the world heritage site "Belfries of Belgium and France". |

 「オステンド」
家に帰る途中、ベルギー北部のリゾート地オステンドに寄りました。海水浴にはまだ早いですが、人はいっぱいいました。これは聖ピーターとポール教会。1886年に焼けてしまい、1908年に再建されたもの。

On the way home, we dropped in Ostend where is the resort in northern Belgium. Though it was too early to bathe in the sea, there are a lot of people. It's St. Peter and Paul church. It burned up in 1886 and was rebuilt in 1908. |

 これはその教会の裏にある聖ピーターの塔
火災を免れた唯一の部分でその礎石は1478年に置かれたとのこと。昔は中に入れたらしいですが、今は安全のためダメ。

 「オステンド」
遠くに見えるのは駅で手前はヨットハーバー。いかにもリゾート地。近くのレストランでランチにパスタを完食したらウェイターに「Unbelievable!」と驚かれました。最初から食えると思っていない量の料理出すなよ。
"Ostend"
It's a station to be seen in the depth and a yacht basin to show toward you. It is a resort definitely. When I ate up pasta in a lunch at a restaurant nearby, the waiter marveled "Unbelievable !". Don't serve the dish of quantity that they don't think to be able to eat from the beginning. |
