 その中でも最も小さい醸造所であるセントシクストゥス修道院に出かけました。この修道院は修道士生活における３つの基本的要素である祈り、読書、毎日の労働で特徴付けられた精神的生活で有名です。
We went to The Abbey of Saint-Sixtus which was the smallest brewery amang them. The abbey is famous for its spiritual life, characterised by prayer, reading, and manual work, the three basic elements of Trappist life. |

1831年、パブテスト派のビクトール隠修士が修道士長として他の数人と共にセントシクトゥスの森に入り、後のウエストフレテレン村の修道院を発展させました。1838年、醸造所が修道院区域に作られ、1839年には小学校、1840年には教会が造られました。

In 1831 the hermit Jan-Baptist Victoor was joined by a prior and a few monks in the woods of Saint Sixtus, and this group developed into the later Trappist abbey of Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren. In 1838 the Westvleteren Brewery was founded inside the abbey precinct. In 1839 a primary school was established and in 1840 the old church of the priory was built |

 修道院に到着。
第一次世界大戦の間、修道院は地域の避難民の隠れ家となり、更に約40000名の同盟軍兵士が修道院内外に住んでいました。第二次世界大戦は修道院にとっていろいろな点で困難な時期となりました。

During World War I the abbey provided shelter to many refugees from the region and in addition almost 400,000 allied soldiers lived in and around the abbey. World War II was a difficult time for the monastery in several respects. |

 修道院ですからこういうものもあります。
戦後、1945年に修道院は醸造所の生産能力を年480キロリットルに減らしました。1964年にはゲストハウス、1968年には新しい教会が加わりました。
There is such kind of thing because it's an abbey.
After the war, in 1945, the abbot decided to reduce the capacity of the brewery to produce only 4,800 hectolitres a year. In 1964 the guesthouse was built, and a new abbey church was added in 1968. |

 購入予約を済ませている車の列。3種類あるビールのうち何が買えるかわかりません。予約は電話のみ。一度購入すると2ヶ月は次の予約ができません。幻のビールと呼ばれる所以です。
It was a queue of the cars which finished a purchase reservation. They didn't know what they could buy among the beer of three kinds. The reservation accepts only a call. If we bought them once, we couldn't make a next reservation for two months. That's why this beer is called a rare beer. |

If we were lucky, beers which we could buy without reservations were sold. We had to go in haste. |

 「ウエストフレテレン」には修道院の方針でラベルが貼られていません。王冠の色で種類が分けられています。いちばん濃厚なのは黄色の「ウエストフレテレン・12」。ベルギー最強のビールと言われています。
Labels are not put on "Westvleteren" by an abbey's policy. A kind is divided with a color of the crown cap. The richest one is "Westvleteren Apt.12" of yellow. It is said that it's the strongest beer in Belgium. |

 買えるかどうかわからずに訪ねた修道院でしたが、買えてよかったー。ブラッセルに帰ります。
Though we visited the abbey without knowing whether we could buy beers, it was very good that we could buy them. We would go back to Brussels. |
