 フランス・ノルマンディー地方の街、バイユーとシャルトルへ行ってきました。途中、セーヌ川を渡りました。セーヌ川が海へ注ぐところです。
We visited towns of the Normandy district in France, Bayeux and Chartres. We crosed Seine on the way. It was the place where Seine entered the sea. |

Bayeux is the town where there are a lot of English notation because bayeux is close to Strait of Dover. I had an impression that it was a quiet town. |

内陣。完全なゴシック様式。大変美しい。12世紀に大きな損害を受けて、大聖堂はゴシック様式で建て直されました。しかし、塔は15世紀に建設が始まったにもかかわらず、19世紀まで完成しませんでした。

 今回バイユーに来たのはここにあるタペストリーを見るためです。
バイユー・タペストリーはおよそ長さ70m、高さ50cmの刺繍された布でノルマンディー公ウィリアム、ウェセックス伯、後のイングランド王ハロルドのヘイスティングズの戦いで最高潮を迎えるノルマン人によるイングランド征服を表しています。
We came to Bayeux to see Bayeux Tapestry this time.
The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long and 50 centimetres tall, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings. |

The tapestry consists of some fifty scenes with Latin tituli, embroidered on linen with coloured woollen yarns. It is likely that it was commissioned by Bishop Odo, William's half-brother, and made in England-not Bayeux-in the 1070s. In 1729 the hanging was rediscovered by scholars at a time when it was being displayed annually in Bayeux Cathedral. The tapestry is now exhibited at the Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux. It was resistered in UNESCO's "Memory of the World Programme" list in 2007. We couldn't take pictures of tapestry. |

50口径M2ブローニング機関銃を4丁それぞれを対にしてオープン・電動銃座に載せたものです。対空砲として開発されましたが、陸上攻撃にも利用されました。第2次大戦中の1943年に導入されましたが米陸軍にはベトナム戦争の時期まで残っていました。

It was based on Canadian-built versions of the American M3 Lee and M4 Sherman tank chassis. When Sherman production in the US expanded and supply was no longer a problem, in 1943 it was decided to switch the Canadian production lines to produce the Sexton to give the British Army a mobile artillery gun using their Ordnance QF 25 pounder gun-howitzer. |

We left "The Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy" and went to "Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery". The nearer side is "M10 tank destroyer" and the far side is "Churchill Crocodile". The Churchill Crocodile was a Churchill VII which was converted by replacing the hull machine gun with a flamethrower. The fuel was in an armoured wheeled trailer towed behind. |

Beaming blue of the stained glasses are called "Chartres Blue" and known very well in the world. The cathedral has three large rose windows. It's the south transept rose (10.5 m diameter, made c.1225-30)and dedicated to Christ, who is shown in the central oculus, right hand raised in benediction, surrounded by adoring angels.
