 米英での名前「バルジの戦い」の方が有名ですが、その70周年を
記念してゆかりの場所をめぐりました。
まずは独軍の先鋒部隊パイパーSS中佐の指揮戦車である
キンガタイガー戦車が残っているラ・グレーズ村へ。
中学生の時、買った写真集に載っていた村へ本物を見に行けるなんて
感無量です。
The operation name of U.S. and U.K."Battle of the Bulge" is more famous than German one. We went round the place of the connection in commemoration of its 70th anniversary. At firat we went to La Gleiz village. The King Tiger commander tank which SS lieutenant colonel Joachim Peiper got on remains in the village. I felt the emotion, because I could go to see the real tank in the village that had appeared on the photo book I had bought at the age of junior high school student. |

 この作戦名は独軍側のものです。正面から見たキングタイガー。ミューズ川を目指したパイパ−戦車隊はここで燃料が尽きました。米軍はスクラップ処分しようとしたのですが、村人がもったいなく思ってコニャック1本と交換したそうです。
This name is German one. This is King Tiger tank watching from front.The Peiper tank corps which aimed at the Muses river ran out of fuel here. U.S.army would scrap it, but a villager who thought it was a waste traded this tank with one cognac. |

 戦車の後ろに40年前の写真集では家があっただけですが、
今はきれいな博物館ができています。
Though there were only a small house behind the tank in the photo-book from 40 years ago, the nice museum is made now. |

 後ろから見るとこの戦車がいかに分厚い装甲を持っていたかわかります。44年当時、この戦車にまともに立ち向かえる戦車は米英軍にもロシア軍にもありませんでした。ただエンジンが貧弱なので、すぐオーバーヒートして廃棄されたことが多かったみたいです。この70トンもある戦車が小さな山道を登ってここまで来たのかと思うとパイパー中佐の苦労が偲ばれます。
We can know how this tank had thick armer by watching from behind. U.S, British and also Russian army didn't have any tanks which could conflont this tank directly in those days. However there were many tanks scrapped by overheata because engine of this tank was very poor. When I thought this tank, weight is 70t, came here by climbing the narrow mountain trail, I felt I could understand the trouble of lieutenant colonel Peiper. |

 次は映画「バルジ大作戦」で有名なバストーニュにある
戦争博物館です。
独軍の３個師団からなる攻撃を米軍第101空挺師団が9日間にわたり
守りぬき、作戦そのものの趨勢を決定しました。
Next is the War Museum in Bastgone where is famous for the movie "Battle of the Bulge".
The 101 airborne division of United States Army kept on keeping the attack of 3 German division for nine days and it decided a trend of the operation itself. |

よく戦後に採用されたスイス軍やチェコ軍のものが飾ってありますが
これは独軍オリジナル仕様
This is a German light tank destroyer "Hetzer(Chaser)".
Though we can often see after WW2 version of this tank, which was adopted to the military of Switzerland or Czech, this is a original version of German army. |

This is the Kubelwagen (literally translated as "bucket car") which is a jeep of German military.

 バストーニュの街の真ん中にも戦車が飾ってあり、
子供の遊び場になっています。
これは米軍のM4A3 75mm砲搭載車（多分）
The tank is displaied also in the center of the town of Bastogne and children plays around becomes the playground of child.

 これは先の戦車の横にある101空挺師団長マッコーリフ少将の像。
彼は独軍の降伏勧告に「Nuts !（バカタレ！）」と回答し
一躍有名になりました。
博物館にもナッツワインというのも売ってました。
This is the statue of major general Anthony McAuliffe, who was the commander of 101 Airborne Division, next to above tank. He is famous for his single-word reply of "Nuts!" in response to a German surrender ultimatum.
