 3年に一度のイベント、イーペルの「猫祭り」に行ってきました。この祭りは1955年から定期的に5月の第2日曜に行われています。午後には旧市街地への車の乗り入れができなくなるので午前中にホテルへ。
We visited Ypres to see Kattenstoet which is held in every three years. It has been held regularly on the second Sunday of May since 1955. We arrived at the hotel in the morning because cars can't enter the town in the afternoon. |

 「聖マルティヌス聖堂」
建設は1230年に始まり、1370年に完成しました。第1次大戦で大きな被害を受け、その後（1922年-1930年）に廃墟はきれいにされオリジナル計画に基づいた再建がされましたが、塔はオリジナルより高い尖塔となりました。

Subsequently (1922-1930) the ruin was cleared and the church was entirely rebuilt following the original plans, although the tower was built with a higher spire than the original. |

 「聖ジェームス教会」
オリジナルの12世紀の教会はロマネスク様式でしたが、14世紀にゴシック様式に建て直されました。1636年に塔が建てられましたが未完成のままでした。第1次大戦で14世紀の西側正門を除いて破壊されました。再建の際、石造りの尖塔が付け加えられました。この教会は一般公開されていません。
"Saint James' Church"
Originally the 12th century building was Roman. In the 14th century the church was rebuilt in Gothic style. In 1636 the tower was built but not finished. During the First World War the church was destroyed. Only the 14th century West-portal remained. With the reconstruction the tower was given a stone spire. This church is only open for church services.

 「繊維会館」
繊維業で栄えた街だけにこの建物が一番立派です。鐘楼は世界遺産です。主に13世紀に建設され1304年に完成しましたが、第1次大戦の砲火で破壊されました。1933年から67年にかけて会館は70mの高さの鐘楼と共に注意深く戦前の状態に再建されました。
"Cloth Hall"
This building is the most splendid in the town because this town prospered in fiber business. The belfry is the world heritage site. it was erected mainly in the 13th century, completed 1304 and destroyed by artillery fire in World War I. Between 1933 and 1967, the hall was meticulously reconstructed to its prewar condition with a 70 metres-high belfry tower. |

 やっと猫のパレードです。このパレードは猫を繊維会館の鐘楼から下の広場に投げていた中世からのイーペルの伝統を記念しています。
At last the parade of cats began. The parade commemorates an Ypres tradition from the Middle Ages in which cats were thrown from the belfry tower of the Cloth Hall to the town square below.

 有名な猫、ガーフィールド。もう一つの説は猫は害獣駆除のために繊維会館に連れてこられたというものです。現代の暖房や保存方法ができる前は、寒くなった時、ウールは繊維会館の上階に保存されました。ウールが売れた後、春の暖かさが始まる時、猫は鐘楼から投げ捨てられました。
A famous cat "Garfield". Another story suggests that the cats were brought into the Cloth Hall to control vermin. Before modern heating and storage methods, when it got cold the wool was stored in the upper floors of the Cloth Hall. At the start of the spring warm-up after the wool had been sold the cats were tossed out of the belfry. |

 「メニン門」
戦争記念碑で第1次大戦中のイーペルで亡くなり、墓がわからない英軍と英連邦兵士に捧げられています。現在では54000名以上の墓がわからない士官と兵士の名前が刻まれています。墓が判明した場合は名前が門から除かれます。
"Menin Gate"
It is a war memorial and dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown. The memorial now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. As graves are identified, the names of those buried in them are removed from the Menin Gate. |

1928年以来毎夕（第2次大戦中ドイツ軍にイーペルが占領されていた期間を除き）8時ちょうどにメニン門に入ってくる周りの交通は遮断され、門の下で地域の消防隊によるラスト・ポスト（英軍の戦没者に捧げるトランペット曲）が演奏されます。この儀式はここで戦い、亡くなった大英帝国の兵士に捧げられています。

Every evening since 1928 (except for a period during the Second World War when Ypres was occupied by Germany), at precisely eight o'clock, traffic around the imposing arches of the Menin Gate Memorial has been stopped while the Last Post is sounded beneath the gate by the local fire brigade. This tribute is given in honour of the memory of British Empire soldiers who fought and died there. |

It's Saint Nicolas Church in the Gothic style of the 14th and 15th centuries. |

 確かにいました。最も古い市庁舎の絵は1275年のものです。その前に何度も修復されましたが、1735年に大胆にロココ様式に改築されました。1891年には再度ネオ-ゴシック様式に再度改築されました。

 「小便小僧」
現在の「小便小僧」は18世紀のものだけれど、最初の「小便小僧」は1455年にあった（ブラッセルの「小便小僧」は1619年）と主張しているそうです。1455年、街は1452年4月16日のジーン・デ・クロエ軍から受けた重大な損害の修復中でした。水道と噴水は修理が必要でしたし、軍がマルクト広場にあった小さなライオンの噴水のオーナメントを運び去ったため、街の行政長官は小さなライオンを小便をする小さな子供に変えることを決定しました。この彫像がベルギーで最も古い小便小僧という訳です。
"Manneke Pis"
Although the current "Manneke Pis" dates the 18th century, I've heard the town insists that the first one was here in 1455. (One in Brussels was made in 1619.) In 1455, the city was recovering from the severe destructions by Jean de Croy's army on 16 April 1452. As the waterworks and fountains had to be repaired and the withdrawing troops had carried off a fountain ornament on the market place showing a little lion, the town magistrates decided to replece a lion by urinating little fellow. This statue is the Belgium's oldest Manneke Pis. |
